My review

After 8 years of troubled development, the Five Nights at Freddy's movie finally released. It mostly lives up to the hype, if you're already a FNaF fan. If you go into this movie looking for the next horror classic, that isn't this movie. I can understand why it was critically panned for the lack of more horror elements and a weirdly written story. However, as a FNaF fan, it's very fun. The animatronics aren't CGI. They were actually built, and they look spot on. There's plenty of cameos, easter eggs, and references to please fans. Like the book series, the movie creates it's own story, mashing together elements from across the Five Nights at Freddy's game series. While it was great to see representation from across the series, it lead to a strangely written story. Characters are parts of different families from the games, the motivations are poorly explained, a scene in the middle of the movie removes all the horror of the animatronics, and the final villain only appears on screen for about 5 minutes. Despite the flaws, I still found plenty to enjoy in the movie, I just didn't find it to be the 10/10 that most other fans consider it to be.
